Sick? Doctors or Prayers?
There was this day when I came back home in the evening. I wanted to do some laundry but I needed to eat first. I made tea and decided to take it with some slices of bread. My dog in her characteristic manner was present in my room, staring with a begging face for a share.
Even when she’s well fed and her tummy is protruding like that of a pregnant minor, she always likes to eat with me. So, slice after slice, I cut a small piece for her while I enjoyed the bigger share. After a while, I needed to make more tea.
I spied suspiciously at Suckey who was watching me closely and, perhaps, praying that my hand will shake. It shook and the milk spilled. She helped herself to the spilled portion.
Like the story of the Canaanite woman who had a daughter that needed to be made whole and came to Jesus for help, Jesus made it clear to her that the miracle she sought was ‘the children’s bread’ and that it wouldn’t be right to give it to dogs.
In her defense, she argued that even “the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.” And on that premise, she secured the needed miracle for her afflicted daughter.
If the miracle this Gentile woman got was classified as ‘crumbs’, how great must the slice be, or even the entire loaf. Yea! how much more for us, who have being made sons and daughters of God! Healing is the children’s bread. Deliverance is the children’s bread. We can simply go to our Father and ask when we need it.
While giving due respect to those in the field of medical sciences, and are constantly researching and discovering new methods of helping the sick, we cannot afford to be over-impressed to the extent that we undermine the great provision of God for our healing.
Some believers are fond of seeking medical advice first whenever they are sick. Hear this: it is wrong! Thought it is not a sin to consult doctors in times of health challenges, it is important to emphasize that God should be our first Contact. Unfortunately, some don’t even seek medical advice anymore, they just apply self-medication, most times to their own undoing.
Doctors care, God heals. The earlier we understand this, the better for us. I am of a strong opinion that the advancements of medical scientists are not primarily for believers. God has already made provision for our healing and health.
Come to think of it, is it not easier to sit in the comfort of your room and command a sickness to vacate your body (which the Scriptures call the temple of the Holy Ghost) than to take a walk the chemist and buy drugs?
Is it not less expensive—yet more effective—to lay hands on the sick (like Jesus actually commands us to do) and watch cancer cells melt under the heat of the Spirit’s fire than to go through several chemotherapy sessions that may not even guarantee total cure?
If you’ve ever lost someone to the chilly hands of death despite the availability of the best of surgeons and world-class health facilities, you will understand that science doesn’t have all the answers.
My heart yearns for the days of healing revivals where people got in healing lines at crusade grounds and went back home perfectly whole. I long that the eyes of our understanding will be enlightened to see that we are not only to enjoy divine healing but to also minister the same to others.
I pray that God will cause us to begin to see Jesus, not only as our Saviour but also as our Healer! He didn’t just suffer for our sins, he suffered for our sicknesses too. The same way we exercised faith for our salvation, we can exercise faith for our healing.
God still heals the sick today. Miracles are real—even in our days! If you’re in the kingdom, it is your legal right, what Jesus calls the ‘children’s bread.’
“But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.” Isaiah 53:5.
“Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.” 1 Peter 2:24.
“Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord” James 5:14.
I declare that as many believers who are trusting God for healing, miracle or any form of deliverance for themselves or some loved ones, as you read this, let faith arise in your hearts to receive, and may the healing virtue of Christ flow into that life in Jesus’ name.
